How To Deal With Character Assassination

Is that really the best advice you can give? was what I mumbled to her under my breath.

You see, we had just moved to Houston from a small town (Kerrville, Texas) and I was ecstatic to attend public school with classmates that looked like me.

I daydreamed about it every night…

But to my surprise it wasn’t what I expected.

First day in Ms. Ford’s math class, I raised my hand and asked about the date of our first quiz. (Math wasn’t my strong suit so I figured better start preparing.)

Seconds after I ask about the quiz to the teacher, the girl in front of me loudly retorts “Who’s this upper class bitch?” as she turns around to stare at me.

This was just the beginning of 9th grade.

One day, after I stopped sobbing in my Mother’s arms, she said, Pumpkin. I know, I know…it hurts, but you have to ignore them. You just have to ignore them.

Really Mom? That’s the best advice you can give. I was pissed. She was my Mother and my protector and that’s the best advice she could give me.

I didn’t know then, but I know now that was the best advice she could’ve ever given me for losers, haters, and character assassinators.

Well, I could share many instances (like when a former direct supervisor spread a nasty rumor that “the only reason why Melodee got multiple pay raises in such a short time period is because she’s sleeping with the boss” even though, she knew that wasn’t true and that I hadn’t slept with anyone at all.) but you don’t have time to hear all my stories. 😉

Have you ever dealt with a character assassinator before?

Listen. If you know in your heart of hearts that you’re walking in integrity, working excellently, serving graciously & humbly… and someone is picking on you, bullying you, and/or straight up attacking your character.

Tell ‘em to talk to the hand, ‘cause your face don’t understand!

That’s my best advice.

Well, technically it isn’t mine, it’s my Momma’s.

But she gave it to me, and now I’m giving it to you.

Thank you for taking your most valuable commodity (time & energy) to read this post.

It is my hope that it encourages you and that you had a beautiful weekend.

with love & hugs,
